North Korea opposes permanent UN seat for Japan
UNITED NATIONS: North Korea on Tuesday strongly opposed any UN move to give Japan a permanent seat on an expanded Security Council, accusing its neighbor and former occupier of posing a military threat to the region.
“Japan’s permanent membership of the UNSC cannot be tolerated at all as it contravenes the main mission of the United Nations, considering its past crimes against humanity, today’s revival of its militarism and threats to neighboring countries,” said Pak Gil Yon, North Korea’s UN ambassador, in a letter to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
UN officials and Japanese and North Korean diplomats in New York had no immediate comment on the letter, which was dated Monday and first reported by China’s official news agency Xinhua.
