If by recent you mean post-Taif to the present, David Gardner wrote a long feature article for the Weekend FT for February 5/6 that's a very good survey IMHO. The second half especially concentrates on Lebanese/Syrian manueverings of the last two years. If you don't subscribe, I can send it to you.
I know some good books that go into the deeper historical fundamentals, but they all end around Taif.
