Again, the Gini for India is based on expenditure. Ditto that for Indonesia. Further, for Indonesia, the source -- the national socio-economic survey -- gives emphasis to food consumption, resulting in a compression effect.

I think Jamie Galbraith uses pay to estimate income -- which probably has the opposite effect, as it would leave out the informal sector activities that low income people engage in to survive.
