India high on IBM radar

BANGALORE: Market leadership in every segment of business, is the goal that the new head of IBM India, Mr Shanker Annaswamy wants to achieve. The company’s total employee strength is at an all-time high of 23,000, probably making it the biggest MNC employer in the country.

“India is a focused market for IBM, high on the radar of the senior management,” he told ET here — eight months after taking over as the managing director for IBM India.

The Indian market is growing at a healthy rate, presenting a big opportunity for more business and continued focus would be on long term strategic outsourcing services deals, for the assured revenues they provide, he added.

IBM India has tasted success in this space by winning orders from companies like Bharti, ABB India, Tata Steel and Siemens among others. Mr Annaswamy wants to speed up wins in this space, by leveraging on the IBM’s people and technical strengths.

The company’s revenues in India in fiscal 2003-04 according to technology magazine Dataquest was Rs 2729 crore. IBM does not give out country specific revenues.

IBM’s chairman Sam J Palmisano in the company’s annual report refers to China, India, Brazil and Russia as four key emerging markets, which are yielding good results. IBM’s business in these four markets has grown more than 25% in 2004, to more than $4 billion. IBM’s revenue in 2004 was $96.3 billion.

Mr Annaswamy said that its hardware side of the business (computer servers) compared to rivals is showing strong growth. On the software and services side too, IBM India is gaining market share, he adds.
