Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Capital Police on Friday arrested Noorul Amin, the divisional engineer of the Pakistan Telecommuni-cations Company Limited, on charges of reproducing the Urdu translation of the Quran without the Arabic text.

Shahzad Town police raided Amin’s house in Rawal Town and arrested him while he was fleeing. According to details, the accused had reproduced the Urdu translation of the Quran without the Arabic text and had displayed the book at various stalls in the city.

The name of the book is Quran Ka Urdu Tarjama (the Urdu translation of the Quran). Religious scholars found that Quranic verses were not in order. They sent the book to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, fearing that the book might create misunderstanding among people.

The ministry after consulting the Interior Ministry decided to confiscate all copies of the book. On instructions from the Interior Ministry, the district administration of the federal capital confiscated the copies of the book from various bookstalls in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Tariq Mahmood Prizada is the complainant in this case registered with the Shahzad Town Police Station under Sub Section 5 of the Quran Act of 1973. The prescribed punishment for this offence is three years imprisonment and a Rs 50,000 fine. MMA legislators had pointed out the matter during the ongoing session of the National Assembly and Religious Affairs Minsiter Ijazul Haq told the House that all copies of the book had been confiscated.
