May 13 (Interfax) - The organizers of public unrest in the Uzbek city of Andizhan have addressed the Russian government to act as a mediator in their negotiations with the Uzbek authorities, the news website www.fergana.ru reported on Friday.
"We ask Russia to act as a mediator in our negotiations with the [Uzbek] authorities," one of the organizers of the Andizhan unrest said.
"We do not want mass bloodshed and casualties, although there have been casualties already. Over 50,000 people have gathered in the main square of the city," he said.

Official government reports say nine people have been killed and 34 wounded since riots began in Andizhan on Friday.

"Military units launched a storm and targeted both armed and unarmed people. Shots were fired at women and children who were used by rally participants as shields," the eyewitness told Interfax by phone on Friday.
"As a result, hostages, who included heads of various regional agencies, among them the prosecutor's office, the tax inspectorate and the national security service, were also killed," he said.

May 13 (Interfax) - Rights organizations in Andizhan said on Friday the Uzbek city "is in a state of anarchy" and the city and "is surrounded by government troops," who are "apparentlygetting ready to storm" Andizhan.
"We, the representatives of rights organizations of Andizhan, call on our government to take all measures to prevent further bloodshed and solve problems by purely political means," the organizations said in a statement.
