I live in the former Soviet Union. We know what Islamism is. You have had one spectacular event (9/11)that you can dismiss as a fluke. For people in Uzbekistan, Chechnya and Pakistan what Islamism means is loud and clear. It means Taliban. I realize that the instinctive leftie reaction is that all attacks against oppressive governments must have good-heartedness at their base, but it just isn't so.
Islamism, in the Talibanist sense of the term, is the ideological basis for most Central Asian "liberation" movements. Do you really want these people to come to power?
