1) Because UGLY is revolutionary. Beauty is ALWAYS superficial ;) Ok, I would recite Keats here, but I will let it go.
2) Creeping (and often galloping) Christian asceticism within Left-wing ranks
3) Because the Left in this country is comprised to no small degree of middle-class students, etc, there is this desire to pass oneself off as some caricature of a prole. Take the RCP (please!), when they came to infuse revolutionary theory into the miners in my small hometown in West Virginia, you should have seen some of the get-ups they wore in order to "mix" with da people. It was pretty funny...especially the accents they copped. Jody Foster did a much better WV accent in "Silence of the Lambs"...let me just put it that way.
