I don't know that that's true about Latin America - there's intense cynicism about "liberal democracy" as just a cover for capitalism. I think people might sacrifice considerable political freedom for a better material life. I think a lot of Americans would sacrifice a lot of freedom to be "safer" should we take another couple of hits from AQ.
