1. >>Christian Parenti's used the word "nihilistic" too - the insurgents he'd talked to had no positive vision for Iraq at all. When he asked them what their ideology was, they said "Islam" and "Ba'athism." When he asked what that meant, they couldn't elaborate. He said they'd rather destroy Iraq than let the US have it.>>

Who destroyed Fallujah, Ramadi, Najaf, Sadr City/Baghdad Slums? Who is bombing Haditha right now? Who bombed Al Qa'im this month? Who bombed the Turkmen city of Tal Afar last September? These aren't country hamlets. These are cities of hundreds of thousands of people. What does Parenti or anyone who would cite such statements as above know about who is destroying Iraq? Your head must be stuck somewhere, if not a cavity then perhaps 'sand'? You ought invert your subjects: The US Occupation would rather destroy and break up Iraq than let Iraqis run it.

2. Speaking of those who would bloviate or believe the bloviators. Who can argue that Iraq isn't a coherent country? How did it stay together for so long? This 'constant threat of sectarian civil war' is being created by the Occupation. The brutal Brits found out just how coherent Iraq could be in resistance to occupation, and so will the Americans. Why? Because the AMERICANS BELIEVE THEIR OWN BULLSHIT, even a few on this very list. That works in NYC and the US, but it won't work outside the greenzone in Iraq.
