[lbo-talk] a threat of a good example: Didion on the Schiavo case

I had some misgivings about ripping this open again, but this essay was so unlike anything I've seen on the subject that I'm posting it anyway. Didion never expressly announces her opposition to the "pull the tube" decision, but it's plain she has grave misgivings about it. What's dizzying about it is that she explains her misgivings based on apparently well-sourced facts while acknowledging weaknesses, misconceptions and unknowns that work against her position. It's not perfect -- I never thought the speculative bulimia was central to any argument, and the Schindlers had plenty of nervous-making advocates -- but the essay is a more effective minority report than anything else I've read.
