KFC opens 1,500th outlet on Chinese mainland

US-based fast food giant KFC recently opened a new outlet in Shanghai, bringing the total number on the Chinese mainland to 1,500.

The new outlet is the first drive-in KFC in Shanghai and the second on the mainland. The other drive-in outlet is located in Beijing.

The American company entered the world's most populous country seventeen years ago.

To consolidate its presence in China, KFC has made a strategic shift, said Zhu Zongyi, vice-president of Yum Restaurants Greater China Ltd. owner of KFC.

Zhu said KFC now no longer simply offers traditional western fast food but also items which are more palatable to Chinese customers.

Louisville, Kentucky-based Yum Brands Inc. has spread to 200 Chinese cities. The company also runs more than 100 Chinese Pizza Hut and Taco Bell outlets.

KFC has more than 13,000 outlets in existence, serving 8 million customers daily in more than 100 countries and regions.

Over the past few years, KFC has grown rapidly in China. In January 2004 it had 1000 outlets on the mainland, and the figure rose to 1,200 in December the same year and to 1,500 10 months later.
