people in both parties sought eisenhower, some dems tried to dump truman in '48 and replace him with ike, truman, himself, asked eisenhower to be on dem ticket as vp running mate that year, liberal americans for democratic action (ada) types then pressed eisenhower, trying to convince him to run as dem in '52...

eisenhower didn't even 'come out' as rep until '52, he had considerable differences with certain elements in rep party, in fact, right-wing almost blocked his nomination, he considered forming centrist party for '56 re-election run (interestingly, fdr considered running as independent 'progressive' for his '36 re-election)... michael hoover
