Yuck, I hate bombast. Can't take Springsteen for similar reasons. I took a Wagner course in college - the prof (who was a real Wagner fetishist, reportedly dressed like him when he was at home) said once that with Wagner, you never got the feeling that he was giving it all. He always had more power in reserve. Bad composers, though, are the ones who sound like they've got it turned up to the max. That's the prob with U2. Bombast compensates for a lack of substance. Kind of like piety among the Pharisees.
