I suppose someone could look this up easily, but my memory is that in the early or mid-30s FDR moved it ahead to allow for a longer xmas shopping season, that there was a lot of fuss, & perhaps Congress got in the act.
For 80 years at least freshman comp students have been writing themes about putting the thanks back into Thanksgiving and Christ back into xmas!
