I don't have a copy like I should of Alan Wald's book on the NY Intellectuals which has a few pgs. on the teenage Wohlstetter's very brief foray into Trotskyism in the 30's and since the downtown DPL is closed on Weds. I can't today run down and re-read the refs. to Wohlstetter and Wolfowitz in Gary Dorrien's, "Imperial Designs: Neoconservatism and the New Pax Americana, " published recently, an update of his, "The Neoconservative Mind, " an excellent book, out of print unfortunately which I do have on my stacks, or James Mann's, "Rise of the Vulcans: The History of Bush's War Cabinet, " which has alot on Wolfowitz and his family and ideological background.

The Neoconservative=Trotskyist, inverted or otherwise trope has gotten way too entrenched in journalistic and polemical writings from paleo-cons on antiwar.com to left-liberal blogs. That some of the founding generation of neo-cons like Kristol pere had Trotskyist involvements in Shactman's Workers Party or before the Shactmanite split from LDT in the SWP and the YPSL faction aligned with the SWP in the SPA, is incontestable. But, as Wald and other writers who do know alot more about the vagaries of the battles between Trotskyists and Stalinists during the 30's in intellectual and activist circles than those I am objecting to, show, by the beginning of the US entry into WWII, all of the founding generation of neo-cons had abandoned Trotskyism and had begun their brief journey through "near-bear" Socialism (if memory serves John Dos Passos put down of Norman Thomas SP to Edmund Wilson when they both supported the CPUSA candidates for Pres. in '32, William Zig Zag Foster and James Ford), decades as Cold War liberals and in their rage against the student New Left and Black Power, into the Right. Off the top of my head, in the 2nd generation of neo-cons, Carl Gershman, Joshua Muravchik and Elliott Abrams had involvements with the 60's Socialist Party via the YPSL and certainly the first two hung out with Shactman (as did Al Shanker and Sandra Feldman of the AFT who just died) but Max hadn't been a Trotskyist for a long time by then.

Final comment in my ramble, Daniel Ellsberg when he was at RAND Corp. worked with Wohlstetter. None of the alleged Trotskyist atomic particles wound up in Ellsberg's head.
