I thought it was the SDF but, when re-reading pg. 5 of Gary Dorrien's, "The Neoconservative Mind, " Temple Univ. Press, 1993, relating the schism trajectory in the SP from Oct. National Committee meeting in which Harrington listened stunned as a female member, longtime Socialist active in the civil rights movement, said she, "hoped Nixon would smash McGovern...though the committee declined to support her position. Harrington was shaken by the support it received from key Party leaders. The general tone of the discussion convinced Harrington that the party of Debs and Thomas was becoming a reactionary force, " leading Harrington to resign from being co-chair of the SP, "This conclusion was reinforced by the prospect of the party's imminant reunification with the Democratic Socialist Federation (DSF), the descendent of the "Old Guard" faction that broke with the Socialist Party in 1936. Harrington feared that a merger with the DSF would greatly strengthen the party's right-wing. Htherefore resigned his chairmanship and prepared for the factional showdown at the party's national convention, which took place in December 1972...Thre youngest Shactmanites led the fight against Harrington's challange. The crucial vote took place over the right-wing's proposal to change the name of the party to Social Democrats, U.S.A.Harrington's opponents won the vote and took control of the party..."

When did the SDF change its name to the DSF? Or am I right in this dim memory that the SDF of the thirties, noted on two pgs. of Daniel Bell's, "Marxian Socialism in the U.S., " merged w/ sometime in the 50's or 60's, the DSF? A question for the SPHistory list...
