Am I wrong, or wasn't Thomas the original stealth candidate? I seem to remember there not only being no paper trail on abortion, but him saying with a straight face that he'd never had a conversation on the topic in his life, not even as an undergraduate. He was also the most unqualified candidate I'd ever seen, his judicial experience being purely nominal. And now he's the right's hero, arguably the most reactionary guy on the court. But none of them see any parallels to Miers. It makes me wonder if I'm misremembering. Michael <<<<<>>>>>

well, flo kennedy knew who/what thomas was, calling him a creep right after bush appointed him, his opposition to affirmative action was known from his days as chair of the equal employment opportunity commission, he, of course, uttered nary a peep about being considered unequal being made to feel inferior when aa got him into (yale?) law school...

true that he had little judicial opinion paper trail (he still has limited written record after 14 years as sitting justice, guy rarely ever asks questions during hearings), but he presented himself as stealth candidate, having been told that 'silence is golden,' particularly with respect to abortion issue, he simply evaded questions (if memory serves, he was asked about roe v wade about 75 times)...

recall reading that thomas remarked to a friend after he was cofirmed that he would be *making law* for a long time, so much for claptrap about judicial constraint, strict construction, blah, blah, blah, of course, his particular version of 'original intent' would preclude him from even being on supreme court...

have always thought it interesting that thomas's very first dissent from conservative faction was in case involving porno and whether feds had entrapped some guy who purchased stuff through the mail, he also broke with rehnquist and scalia a couple of years ago in voting - with majority - to overturn federal law re. pornography & children... michael hoover
