The Brown Act, officially known as the Ralph M. Brown Act (California Government Code Sections 54950-54963), authored by Ralph M. Brown, a Central Valley assemblyman representing Turlock, was enacted in 1953 by the California State Legislature in an effort to safeguard the public's right to access and participate in government meetings within the State.

Metro board to meet as strike enters third week By GENEVIEVE BOOKWALTER SENTINEL STAFF WRITER
SANTA CRUZ — County transit officials violated state law by not publicizing results of a board vote that prompted county bus drivers to strike last month, two First Amendment lawyers said Monday.
Directors with Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District voted Sept. 23 to veto a tentative state-mediated agreement between negotiating teams from the agency and 145 drivers with United Transportation Union Local 23. The decision motivated bus drivers to walk off the job Sept. 27.
Directors meet at 9 a.m. today to decide their next moves as the strike enters its third week. But drivers, their supporters and Metro critics question why the district and board refuse to release results of the strike-triggering vote. Without it, they say, it’s impossible to hold the 11 board members accountable.
