Finally, they got the clue!

The trick in politics is to find out what makes people "tick." It is a demand-supply situation. Most people are indeed rational, but in their own way, so the trick is to find out the frame that defines their rationality - and the first in this endeavor is to realize that this frame is very unlikely be one that university professors, and self-styled moralists and do-gooders think it ought to be.

It seems that the frame that got immensely popular in the past 15 or so years is the one which I call "gangster gratification" (you probably noticed my penchant for alliteration by now). This is the frame of seeking thrill and adrenaline rush by displays of raw aggression and nihilism to obtain instant emotional gratification.

Gangsta rappers and video game industry discovered that some time ago and used that knowledge to peddle products that instantly gained popularity beyond wildest possible dreams. Repugs took note and followed the suit, soon gaining a fabulous payoff in the form of full control of the three branches of the government, while Democrats, as always, remained clueless.

The "gangster gratification" is a cultural trope and a frame of mind that has three essential elements:

1. The presupposition of a highly hierarchical you-are-either-on-the-top-or-on-the-bottom, competitive, us-or-them, kill-or-be-killed world.

2. The appeal to the victimization complex - you could be the top dog but you are not because the others fixed the game, play unfairly and screwed you up; it is their fault not yours.

3. A promise of instant boost of status and respect (which most people yearn anyway) by nihilistic rejection of any rules ("they are rigged anyway") and wanton unrestrained aggression and violence ("they" deserve it anyway, because they stand in my way to getting what I justly deserve).

This is the appeal to raw macho power, getting what I want, and smashing everything that stands in my way. Gangsta rappers discovered that many years ago and started manufacturing a product that became immensely popular not just among the blacks, for the product was initially marketed, but among suburban whites. More precisely, among suburban teens precisely because it offered them what they desired in their wet dreams and pissed off their superiors (parents and teachers). The video game industry followed with similar products.

The popularity of that message was not lost on the Repugs - but they faced a slight problem - they language of gangsta rappers was an absolute turn-off to the constituencies they tried to reach, mainly because of their closet or not-so-closet racism. It needs to be underscored that the constituencies that were turned off by the gangster gratification modes itself due to its nihilism and violence were basically written off of hopeless bleeding hearts and wussy liberals.

So the Repugs had to come with "white" or GOP-gangsta rappers that appeal to the Archie Bunker types. They found such a GOP-gangsta rapper in the persona of George W. Bush. Bush, who is perfectly capable of delivering conventional and perfectly acceptable political speeches, started GOP-gangsta-rapping while running for President for the first time. The notorious blunders, the redneck style, drawl, and cockiness was all part of the plan. This was a rather timid effort at the beginning - but quickly became perfected into a full blown orgy of appeals to violent self-righteousness and nihilistic attacks on anyone standing, or perceived be standing, in their way.

The Bush-as-a-GOP-gangsta-rapper shtick was so successful that won him the second term - just like similar shticks made "ordinary" gangsta rappers and vide game manufactures popular and wealthy. Gangster gratification has a very strong popular appeal - especially to teens and those who, like most men in this country, failed to mature beyond that stage.

And what was the Democratic response to these advances in gangster gratification? More of the same, more boring pontificating, moralizing, playing it nice, appeals to fairness etc - whose only effect was to provide even more targets and punching boys for the GOP gangsta rappers to attack and destroy, scoring even more "point" with the public,

The message that you posted seem to suggest, however, that Democrats finally got the clue and started gangsta rapping on their own. If they are successful and can deliver enough gore (no pun intended) - who knows, may be they become popular again and win an office or two.

But I do agree with you that this is a reason to hate them - because the game that they are playing and what makes so many people "tick" is indeed reprehensible. Democracy turned mob rule - just as Aristotle warned.
