I tend to agree. My impression is that lumpenthuggery is not based on any ideology at all beyond trying to find a justification after the fact (ergo, trying to look for "intellectual roots of or influences on" groups like neo-Nazis and skinheads is kind of pointless). They know nothing.
I caught a special on Russian TV a while ago on the skinheads in Voronezh, which is unfortunately famous for them. The journalist was interviewing a skinkhedka (female skinhead) in some squat, and pointed to to the swastika scrawled on the wall saying something like "you know, that symbol is not very popular here, what with the Nazi invasion and all." The skinkhedka responded by stating that the swastika is not a Nazi symbol but instead an ancient Slavic symbol meaning strength. I repeat, these people know nothing. One wonders what she thinks they are commemorating on Victory Day.
