Perhaps a literary type is a bad example for Manhattan worldliness in this
day and age. Why not use a Wall Streeter or consultant? I'll bet that the
financier is more likely to be multilingual and culturally aware than the
writer and has traveled more widely, on both business trips and vacations.
Writers used to be the people who transmitted ideas between cultures due to
their influence and worldiness. Which part of the elite claims that honor
today? (I'm not counting worldly people who have little influence over the
system.)
