Actually, the above should have been my subject head because it frames the 
issue in its wider context. No doubt there were reactionary impulses among 
some opponents of sharia law, but the overall thrust is progressive - just 
as is the case with criticism of Israel or the influence of Jewish 
conservatives in the Bush administration.
