Har har har fs, the Chemical Ali quote is from HRW and numerous other sources cite it like The Slate columns vs. Wanniski/Pellataire line that Halabja was an Iranian war crime.

Just looked through all the books on Iraqi history and the Gulf War here at the DPL, from leftists like Dilip Hiro to neo-con M. Wurmser (cited by Hiro in his footnotes), "Saddam: America's Ally, Arab journalists like Said K. Aburish, the Patrick Cockburn book, "The Resurrection of S.H, " Phoebe Marr and Charles Tripp histories of Iraq, etc. Estimates vary between 30,000 and 300,000 of the killings by the Ba'athists in the Sh'ia south in the '91 intafada. As does, Iranian involvement, official and via SCIRI. Aburush discounts official Iranian involvement, saying that Iran was well aware of regional qualms about the breakup of Iraq. Cockburn says that the Mukharabat itself in psy-op (false flag?) infiltrated the mass in the revolt w/ photos of Khomenei. As for the program and ideology of the uprising, again accts. in the sources I scanned vary. Some say the Sh'ia were demanding power sharing/democratic pluralism. Tony Cordesman, who I respect (as does Left Hook editor ;-) as an analyst, 'sez different.

Other Sources: The Saddam Hussein Reader, ed. by Terri Munthe. Chapter excerpt from Cruelty and Silence by Makiya.
