Planned power project to cost Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania dearly

The planned Zambia-Kenya-Tanzania electricity inter-connector project is estimated to cost around 350 million US dollars.

The project is expected to complete by 2009 to benefit the three countries and hopefully Rwanda that also participated in the latest round of consultations among the three countries and has asked to be part of the inter-connector, according to local media in Dar Es Salaam reports on Thursday. Mobilization of funds will start soon after the final round of consultations involving electricity utility companies in Kenya, Zambia and Tanzania.

The inter-connector project envisages providing electricity to rural residents in the three countries by connecting the three countries' power grid through newly established power transmission lines.

The project is expected to start with a 700-km power transmission line to be set up in between Serenje of Zambia and Mbeya of Tanzania.
