Dear LOBsters,

Our conservatives down here in Oz (officialy titled, "Liberals) think that this "self-objectification" needs to be taught. The 60s just ruined people. No respect for decorum.

WA schoolgirls to mind their manners 11:44 AEST Sat Sep 17 2005 AAP Teaching young ladies the finer points of etiquette and personal grooming will fill a gap in the state's school curriculum, the West Australian Liberal Party's Women's Council says. Council patron Barbara Scott - a Liberal MP whose portfolios include arts, culture and children - said children should be taught how to act properly and present themselves well in order to succeed after school. She agrees with the sentiment behind a motion drafted by the Canning division of the council that is set to be debated at the party's state conference in Perth at the end of this month. Ms Scott said the motion targeted young women, but she felt young men also would benefit. "The nature of the motion is, as I understand it, a move to have grooming and deportment introduced into schools as an optional subject for girls, but certainly if it is debated, there will be people who would move to extend it to young men as well," she said. While Ms Scott said she would not be able to vote on the motion, she would happily speak in its favour. "I would support it in the context of the West Australian debate about raising the school leaving age, and having outcomes-based education programs which target students who are not necessarily tertiary bound," she said. "Many of the private schools have this as a subject just as they have speech and drama." Far from being old-fashioned, Ms Scott said deportment classes could help young adults impress prospective employers and equip them with the skills needed to negotiate an era of political correctness. "I think some people could put that spin on it as being trite and quaint but I think if you look at the modern workplace ... when young people are about to take on a job its very important that they understand the importance of their grooming, their etiquette and their manners," Ms Scott said. "In a workplace that is full of opportunity to be charged with sexual harassment it is very important for young people to be fully aware of the boundaries of the language they can use in the workplace, interview techniques can be developed, letter writing skills, telephone answering techniques and just personal development."
