I think it really depends where you live. Small towns are generally horrible - probably as bad if not worse than comparable US places, whereas large metropolitan areas are quite cosmopolitan and open for outsiders - if they can afford living there (which is a big if). The US has an advantage of the economies of scale - given its sheer size it is easier to find an acceptable place outside major metropolitan areas than it is in most European countries.
