Doug quoted:

>The morning papers gave no clues as to what drove the decision,
>although both the New York Times and the Washington Post hinted
>broadly that he was forced out. But why? It couldn't have been the
>postponement -- again -- of approving Plan B, the morning after
>contraceptive pill. Crawford was doing the administration's bidding
>on that issue.

Not really. The administration would like them to turn it down outright. What FDA has been doing is refusing to decide, delaying again and again, which is what led the head of women's health to resign in protest. The advisory committee hearings were held in Dec. 2003, since then they've missed three deadlines.
