Ukraine and Georgia are in an especially ludicrous situation. Ukraine's economy is based on Russia's. Ukrainians come to Russia in droves visa-free to work and send money home. What economy Georgia possesses only functions because Russia subsidizes it, partially I think out of a fear that the place will totally collapse. It's like a teenager who wants to be independent but still wants his parents to give him his allowance.
A while ago Georgia was threatening Russian bases on its territory with -- cutting off the electricity and gas that Georgia was given by Russia. No lie. You couldn't make this stuff up.
