HOUSTON, Texas (Reuters) - A Texas grand jury on Wednesday indicted U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader Tom DeLay on a single conspiracy charge related to fund-raising activities by a political action committee he created, CNN reported on Wednesday.
DeLay is the second most-powerful House Republican and represents a Houston-area district. He has been under investigation by Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle for possible illegal fund-raising and use of corporate funds by his Texans for a Republican Majority committee, or TRMPAC.
Republican party rules require Delay to leave his leadership post in response to an indictment, but he could remain in Congress.
