I'm in the middle of reading a very interesting book of how the big employers and the insurance companies influenced the Social Security Act and the evolution of social insurance in the United States. It's a complicated story that shows the flexibility of ideological positions when the times demand felxibility, and also when there's a business opportunity. Immediately on dropping their opposition to federal pensions, the insurers began building their sales strategy around it. Maybe even before they dropped their opposition.
