I'm in the middle of reading a very interesting book
of how the big employers and the insurance companies
influenced the Social Security Act and the evolution
of social insurance in the United States. It's a
complicated story that shows the flexibility of
ideological positions when the times demand
felxibility, and also when there's a business
opportunity. Immediately on dropping their opposition
to federal pensions, the insurers began building their
sales strategy around it. Maybe even before they
dropped their opposition.

and the Shaping of America's Public-Private Welfare State
