<DIV>I am usually just a friendly lurker of the list but today I'll jump in to
thank Doug Henwood for calling attention to the seriousness of the Chavez
situation in Venezuela. Not only the Bushites have made clear their contempt for
Chavez but Venezuelan opposition leaders residing in Miami have openly called
for Chavez to be "shot on the streets like a dog".Also the Colombian government
is being prompted to provoke a military confrontation in the border with
Venezuela. With the increasing role that oil prices will play in upcoming class
struggles in the US, the control of Venezuelan resources becomes more imperative
for Bush & CO.</DIV>
<DIV>This a time when, as a Latin American, I lament the present weak and
ineffectual state of the American left, since this would be the
perfect moment to mobilize and demonstrate in campuses and cities against
the forthcoming US led interventions. </DIV>
<DIV>Venezuela is not the only target. of the neo-cons in South America. In
adddition,Bolivian peasant revolt leader Evo Morales is being demonized
constantly in the western press. In particular, the Financial Times led by
neo-con columnist Amity Shlaes, now refers regularly to Evo Morales as
"Evil" Morales on account of having successfully stopped the theft of natural
gas by foreign companies. However,in the Bolivian case, it is European
capital-French and Spanish - that leads the pillage of resources.</DIV>
<DIV>At least, Bolivia is a landlocked country at 10,000 feet altitude. No
Marines landing scenario here, fortunately.</DIV>
