I think a comparison with  another Pope is more apt. .Pacelli,the future Pius XII, developed a lifelong, visceral hatred of the left and of Communism as a result of his personal experiences in Munich during the aborted German revolution of 1918/1919  and carried that into his papacy during WWII and thereafter.
