As a graduation present (out of first grade) in (socialist) Romania, I got
a bag of candy and a copy of a book called "Cippolino."<br>

If I remember right it was the epic adventure of an onion (Cippolino) and
his vegetable friends, against the aristo count Mandarin. Cippolino's secret
weapon was that he could make people cry. Anyway, it was definitely a kid's
"socialist" book. Haven't been able to locate it since then. I still remember
it forty years later; so it must have been a pretty decent book.<br>

William Steig writes very lefty-leaning stuff though, as does Dr. Seuss.
"Yertle the Turtle" is a good example.<br>

One could also dig through older Soviet children's to find other examples.
Arcadi Gaidar was pretty good as I remember.<br>
