<HTML><HEAD> <META http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> </HEAD><BODY><DIV></DIV><DIV>The story so far: </DIV><DIV>In 2002 the US Drug Czar, John P. Walters attends a drug forum in </DIV><DIV>Vancouver, British Columbia. Also attending was well known marijuana </DIV><DIV>advocate, activist, and politician, Marc Emery. At this "meeting of </DIV><DIV>the minds" were also many members of various police and Drug </DIV><DIV>enforcement entities, including of course the DEA. Not one to be </DIV><DIV>intimidated by this, what to many would be considered a hostile </DIV><DIV>audience, Emery proceeded to counter Walter's more "controversial" </DIV><DIV>claims with commentary which in summary, can best be described by </DIV><DIV>one particularly apropos epithet.... "Liar!". Walters scuttled back </DIV><DIV>home, leaving little doubt that he is not pleased with Larry </DIV><DIV>Campbell's "Four Pillars" process and no doubt at all about a hatred </DIV><DIV>for at least *one* particular Canadian. </DIV><DIV>  </DIV><DIV>Move ahead to the spring of 2003. A most curious affair takes place </DIV><DIV>on the highway leading out of Vancouver, B.C. A lone off-duty </DIV><DIV>Vancouver City police officer is pulled over to the side of the </DIV><DIV>highway by police officers...... from Texas? Yes. This officer sues </DIV><DIV>for wrongful arrest and recently wins his case. An internationally </DIV><DIV>disturbing incident which I note received virtually no attention </DIV><DIV>from Canadian media. </DIV><DIV>But this last incident naturally leads one to consider whether there </DIV><DIV>might be some kind of vendetta against Marc Emery. Move ahead to </DIV><DIV>the arrest and imprisonment of a Canadian citizen, at the request </DIV><DIV>of the DEA. Marc Emery and several friends are busted for the crime </DIV><DIV>of....selling marijuana seeds. </DIV><DIV>  </DIV><DIV>Now seriously. Do you think the RCMP thought of this themselves? Has </DIV><DIV>any Canadian been busted for seeds in the last 20 years? Do we care </DIV><DIV>about such a thing? Of course not. So what happened? For an answer </DIV><DIV>to that we turn to Seattle Intelligencer reporter Joel Connelly, who </DIV><DIV>has quoted DEA head honcho Karen "Kickass" Tandy as saying, quote: </DIV><DIV>  </DIV><DIV>  'Today's arrest of Mark (sic) Scott Emery, publisher of Cannabis </DIV><DIV>    Culture magazine and the founder of a marijuana legalization </DIV><DIV>    group, is a significant blow not only to the marijuana </DIV><DIV>    trafficking trade in the U.S. and Canada, but also to the </DIV><DIV>    marijuana legalization movement. </DIV><DIV>  </DIV><DIV>   'Hundreds of thousands of dollars of Emery's illicit profits </DIV><DIV>    are known to have been channeled to marijuana legalization </DIV><DIV>    groups active in the United States and Canada. Drug </DIV><DIV>    legalization lobbyists now have one less pot of money to rely </DIV><DIV>    on.' </DIV><DIV>  </DIV><DIV>I'm not sure about the laws in the US, but I would think that using </DIV><DIV>taxpayer dollars to obstruct the democratic process may run somewhat </DIV><DIV>contrary to the oft-touted (yet seldom heeded) Constitution of the </DIV><DIV>United States of America. But then....what's new? </DIV><DIV>  </DIV><DIV>Indeed. I'll tell you. </DIV><DIV>  </DIV><DIV>It seems that Canadian government officials have taken a sudden </DIV><DIV>interest in parroting the George W. Bush line of reasoning. For </DIV><DIV>instance, they have all quite suddenly framed <em>our</em> goals as a nation from "The Good Guys vs. Terrorism" to "the struggle against </DIV><DIV>religious extremism". Of course the truth being that the Western nations should be able to attack others with impunity, yet somehow interpret their resistance as "terrorism". Indeed, we have seen the leaders of the developed nations suddenly and simultaneously adopt this new frame describing this important issue. But is this sudden attempt at re-framing merely coincidence? Of course not. </DIV><DIV>  </DIV><DIV>  Be clear about this. I know that a response to the religious hatred </DIV><DIV>expressed by the WTC destruction should have been met with an </DIV><DIV>equally forceful attack on the perpetrators. That was done in </DIV><DIV>Afghanistan. But Iraq? Where did that come from? But I digress. </DIV><DIV>  </DIV><DIV>  </DIV><DIV>The Bush government is now extending their cover story "war against terrorism" to Canadian citizens with pot seeds. At what point does it become clear that the Bush administration is pushing an ideological war, and not the professed military war supposedly based on the physical security of it's citizens. It is now quite plain that the American conservatives are pushing a war on the liberal morality of persons who hold "live and let live" beliefs. As such, it seems equally obvious that this attack must be turned back. And we have been presented with a perfect corridor from which to attack. The DEA has violated Canadian sovereignty with the Emery arrest; a fact that can be used to great advantage by those of us who wish to point out the lawlessness of, ironically, the American law-enforcement agencies themselves. It is time to put them back in their boxes. </DIV><DIV>  </DIV><DIV>Comments and additions to this time-line are welcome.
