An early novel by James, Confidence, is not difficult reading and with
(for James) a surprising 'happy' ending on all sides. It's lightweight,
but that should not bother a 12-year old. And reading it will not
interfere with reading more James later, while my personal opinion is
that reading P&P at an early age can bar one forever from reading Austen
intelligently. It's too apt to turn one into a Dear Janeite.
