A few I read while quite young that did say something interesting:
Asimov's "I, Robot", largely about what maks us human Heinlein "Stranger in a Strange Land"
and if you want a love story: Ursula Leguin "Left Hand of Darkness", a fascinating speculation on human sexuality with a "love conquers all" theme mixed in
Then again, if she wants love stories, why not just pick up half a dozen Harlequin Romances at the nearest second hand bookstore? My guess is a smart kid would quickly tire of them, but I could be wrong.
