John Thorton writes: 'Teaching kids to kill is going to be harmful for a certain number of them'. Which means the rest are going to be okay? God help us all when this type of reasoning appears reflective and conciliatory, as it does in Thorton's post. Since American Armed Forces have done nothing, since WWII, that warrants the label 'warrior', and since their explicit purpose for the last thirty years (whereas it was hardly hidden before that, but nonetheless one could still be fooled) has been imperial conquest and control, it's makes me wonder how leftists can glorify any part of the military. Guilt? Resignation? What? So much backbending to 'understand'. Understand what? The military is a way out of poverty? So is burglary and drug dealing. Care to justify that too? Those who enlist are caught up in patriotic fervor? So what? That's no different than saying emotionally unstable and incapable or unwilling to discern truths from falsehoods, even when the difference is transparent. I've been poor, yet never felt the need to be a criminal. I've been offended and outraged, even in a patriotic sense, but never felt the need to kill anybody or join a club that kills people purposefully or indiscriminately. The military can only be redeemed, in my view, when it stays within the country's borders, protecting its people, not otherwise. As for real estate agents and wall street types and rest that you posit as equally emotionally unstable, I have to agree, but don't see what point you're making by way of comparison. Louis
