I feel offended on Hersh's behalf that he's essentially being accused of carrying water for the Bush admin. The man is a national treasure and deserves a lot better than that.

Agreed.
The entire point of the New Yorker article is Hersh's attempt (and despite the measured prose, you can feel the urgency fueling his work) to communicate with everyone within the sound of his voice the serious concerns of staffers who're convinced the 'wheels have come off the wagon'; that their bosses are making catastrophically delusional plans.
He's trying to warn us and it's odd and off putting to read criticisms that appear to take neither the warning nor the journalist seriously.
