I'd like to see less sadness in this thread and a lot more fury, not at Marta but at The System. There is no activity more natural or more central to the mechanism of capitalism than setting desperate marginalized groups against each another. To combat this, the left has to free itself from its current postmodern torpor and get back to fomenting class war -- demonizing the plutocrats and military who squander the resources that would make it possible to create a just society, not just a playpen for billionaires. Calling for socialism seems to be seen as quaint these days, as anachronistic as wearing spats. I think that POV is the worst kind of defeatism. Oil-starved, debt-saturated American society will devolve into increasingly vicious struggles between identity groups unless people are able to find common cause under the banner of socialism.
