I've been reading about the movie too, which the NY Times describes as "the feel-bad American movie of the year."

I'm still waiting for the feel-bad movie about the civilian plane that definitely was shot down by the US, i.e.: Iran Air Flight 655 (IR655), a commercial flight from Tehran to Bandar Abbas to Dubai, which on July 3, 1988 was shot down by the guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes between Bandar Abbas and Dubai, killing all 290 passengers and crew aboard. The crew of the Vincennes were all awarded combat-action ribbons, so the US did not feel all that bad about this incident, although it formally "regretted the loss of human life." <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655>
