(a whole lot of stuff about Hezbollah firing from the vicinity of the UN post)
which would be a lot more interesting if the IDF hadn't already made a statement to the effect that they had dialled in the co-ordinates of the UN post, according to them by mistake. The bomb or rocket which destroyed the UN post was not one which was aimed "in the vicinity" of the UN post and missed. It was one which was aimed at the UN post and hit.
In any case, the UN post is in the middle of the battlefield, so it is not exactly surprising that there is going to be firing "in the vicinity" of it. If you are a UN observer, observing a war, and there is nobody firing in the vicinity of you, then you have nothing to observe. Both sides were meant to take care not to hit the UN observers and both sides failed.
However, the total destruction of the UN post was not a result of accidentally hitting it. It was either intentionally destroyed, or destroyed as a mistake over co-ordinates. This TIME magazine story is clear on the fact; the IDF's story is that an Army spotter saw Hezb "near" the post (did I mention that the post was on the battlefield) but, according to him accidentally, phoned in the co-ordinates of the post instead of the co-ordinates where he had spotted Hezb.
Unfortunately, according to the IDF, nobody noticed the big blue markings "UN" on the maps, the pilot did not double-check the co-ordinates and nobody saw the big letters "UN" on the top of the building.

Stuart, you're claiming to have a "fact based" explanation which is rather more exculpatory of the IDF than the IDF's own press releases. If you are a partisan of the Israeli cause then it probably makes sense to be an advocate for their actual case rather than muddying the debate by making up hypotheses of your own. If you do want to speculate (as we all do from time to time) please mark it clearly as speculation - your theory that the UN post had been accidentally hit by IDF troops firing at Hezbollah was definitely speculation, not "fact based".
