Mandela's struggle was "almost entirely non-violent" because he was imprisoned too early to take active part in the armed struggle of the militia he co-founded. He has made it quite clear that he approved of it, and would have taken part in it, had he been free.

Bit of a bugbear of mine, this Mandela revisionism.
