You can be neither an artist nor a philosopher if you insist on being literal-minded always. The way of life and state of mind that Edward Said wished to recommend is to be at home in exile, rather than seeking to build a homeland of their own that excludes all others, but neither Jews nor Palestinians -- nor any other people for that matter -- have taken to his recommendation, at least not many of them.
