[lbo-talk] Hitch on ObL as liberation theologist

About a year ago, Michael Berube - Penn State Univ. cultural studies and literature professor, famous blogger and, as Dennis Perrin recently pointed out, fan of the 'Chomsky likes bad people' school of by the numbers Noam criticism - wondered about the transitional process folk who travel left to right undergo.

It's not surprising, Berube wrote, that after seeing something as mind bogglingly large as the WTC's collapse a person might become a bit bloodthirsty - it would be unfortunate but certainly unsurprising.

But why, once they've accepted a portion of the imperialist viewt, do converts later start nattering on about ancient ultra-conservative talking points such as Jane Fonda in Hanoi and Ted Kennedy's sordid past?

Hitchens' eagerness to appear on right-wing radio shows spouting the dullest (and also most dangerous) sort of propaganda - that the Left loves terrorists and throws birthday parties for ObL - is just the kind of in for a penny in for a pound metamorphosis Berube was talking about.

It's as if there's only a fixed quantity of original thought the mind can endure - once you've reached your limit it's time to call upon off-the-shelf beliefs.

I never liked you Rusty...you were always a smart alec, a sass mouth and a bit of a giggle puss.
