The next election for KPFA Local Station Board representative is this coming fall. KPFA is an invaluable and irreplaceable resource for our community. It is important for you to get involved because the project of cultivating participatory democracy at KPFA is still in its infancy. A key part of pushing this project forward is to increase the level of participation and awareness among listener-subscribers. The view that the role of listener-subscribers is to be passive, and allow the organization staff and governing boards to operate without any oversight and accountability contributed to an environment which led to the attempted usurpation of the entire network in the late nineties. While it is important that the KPFA community provide a supportive environment for the dedicated programmers and staff this relationship has to be mutually beneficial. We encourage you all to join us in moving toward this goal of increasing listener participation and ensuring that the

station remains genuinely responsive to the needs of the communities that it serves and to try to gain an understanding of the many complex governance issues that are at stake in this election.

The deadline for eligibility to vote in the KPFA election or to run as a candidate is September 1st. In order to be eligible one must have contributed at least the minimum of $25 to KPFA in the past year. The most expedient way to do this is online at http://www.kpfa.org/support/ . Please forward this reminder to your friends and colleagues who may be KPFA listeners and who may want to participate in the upcoming election. The final date to declare your intention to run is September 25th. Please go to http://www.kpfa.org/elections/ to download election materials. Please get involved to preserve, maintain and improve this precious institution.
