I think that qualified support for al-Sadr as a genuinely popular figure
and perhaps among the least worst feasible options in Iraq is a much
more reasonable position than being enthusiastic about Ahmadinejad.
But that will always leave the problem of when to start demanding that one's qualified support needs to see progress on queer (or other) issues in order for it to be manitained and continued. Human beings being what they are, it is often wise to get agreement before you offer support since there is less incentive to change after the support has been given.
