I assume Doug is referring to "thinking" among western leftists. If so he is being ridiculous, for no thinking of any kind among western leftists could have made the slightest difference in Iranian politics. Doug often seems to bring to politics the attitude of the fans in a football or baseball stadium. _Hoping_ that the next batter gets a hit may in fact increase the spectator's enjoyment of the game, but it would be bizarre to say that such thinking affected whether or not the batter did indeed get a hit. Doug seems to go that bizarre route and to ascribe actual causal effect to the attitudes of onlookers.
