So how do you get people to participate in these social movements if they so violate their common sense?

[WS:] Through social networks. Research shows that agreement with movement's goal is poor predictor of movement participation. A more likely venue is being asked to participate by a significant other, friend, or a coworker. Agreement with movement goals develops as a result of movement participation, rather than being a reason for the participation.

It thus follows that the main task is to get people involved in an organized activity by asking them to participate and then hope that their consciousness will follow. This may be a tricky task though, because outside religion (which tends to be conservative), social networks tend to be weak and fragmented, especially among the populations that might be the primary target of left organizing. Social connections tend to be positively correlated with class status.
