I would bet there is no good reason for running both at the same time. I'll ask the HVAC instructor at the college if he knows of one but I can't think of any reason they should both run at the same time since they are working towards opposite ends. The A/C unit absorbs heat from the air so why would adding additional heat to the air while simultaneously trying to extract it do anything except ruin efficiency?
